It’s possible to write a building biography at any time, not just when you need a Historic Resource Evaluation. I wrote The Hays-Latimer Adobe: A Unique Early California Gothic Revival Peripteral (2023) for the owner of the adobe, to bring together everything known and not previously known about his home in a readable form for him and his guests and visitors. The Hays-Latimer is extraordinary, the only Gothic Revival domestic adobe: the result was an 80-page book with seventeen images and 16,000 words of history and architectural history. But I’ve also written far shorter building biographies for clients.

Archie McLaren: The Journey from Memphis Blues to the Central Coast Wine Revolution (2018) was a collaboration with its subject, the legendary wine promoter and fundraiser, in the months after his cancer diagnosis. I read the final draft out loud to him and friends throughout a Saturday afternoon three days before his death.
